Alternative Berlin Experience

Here's what's going to happen

Discover Berlin´s famous underground subcultures, alternative lifestyle, multicultural neighborhoods and street art and graffiti scenes with an expert local guide!

Let´s take a walk through Berlin's most colourful and exciting neighborhoods, a world away from the typical tourist stops to the local scenes and hidden corners of this amazing city.

We´ll visit Berlin´s Turkish quarters and learn about the social climate, immigration and left wing ideologies of the 60´s, 70´s ,80´s. The punks, the riots and gentrification in the legendary Kreuzberg district.

Relax and explore the local organic markets , cafe districts and beautiful streets once frequented by David Bowie and Christopher Isherwoood in the flamboyant , gay friendly Schönenberg district.

On our route we´ll see up close and personal some incredible Street art /graffiti, mural art projects, squat houses in Mitte´s secret courtyards and discuss Berlin´s new high tech/internet start up boom.

Discover bizarre inner city farms & guerilla gardens ,underground galleries and marvel at some of the city´s most unusual architecture. While we freshen up on the decadent weimar / cabaret era and it´s connections to the current debaucherous Berlin clubbing scene, we´ll sample some delicious local food and beverages and end the tour at a magnificently chilled African / Jamacian beach bar in Friedrichshain, on a site where the former Berlin wall once stood.

This Real Berlin experience examines this amazing city´s many different contrasts , colours and creative scenes in one afternoon. From alternative & underground to urban , retro , decadent & cosmopolitan. We compare the East & West Berlin neighbourhoods and make a connection to the wonderful people that live here. AB metro card is recommended!

Did they deliver? Yes and no.

Website said "We’ll visit the city’s thriving African, Turkish, Jewish and gay communities." This didn't really happen... at least not that any of us noticed.

Then "Take a walk through Berlin’s subculture /counter culture history and see some of the world’s most breathtaking Street art & graffiti up close and personal on this authentic local experience." Yes, absolutely, we got all of that, well done.

The guide was nice and knowledgable, and all in all we had an enjoyable day.

We loved the tour! It was exactly how we hoped it would be. Orsola did a great job. She showed us a Berlin we could never have discovered by ourselves. Thanks for a great day in a beautiful city!

I had a great time doing the Alternative Berlin Experience tour.
Trish was a great host and gave us very interesting insights about the history of Berlin from the 1920s to nowadays, districts by districts. It's always good to know a bit more about the city you live in! She also has a serious knowledge about Berlin street artists and that was enjoyable as well.
She is a skilled and passionate guide and will make you feel very comfortable all way long. I definitely recommend the tour!

Just one thing good to know before going:
You will need a day-ticket for public transportation, so you can buy it before and use it to come to the tour if needed.
    It costs 6,30€.

Matti was a great and knowledgeable guide! He showed us around many of places in Berlin that I don't think you would usually go to. Also, if you are interested in street art this is an amazing tour! From street food to graffiti and strange local hangouts, we saw/ate/experienced it all! Definitely worth it.

    Great tour!

    Great experience!
Despite the freezing cold in the streets of Berlin, the tour was extremely interesting and really showed this other side of Berlin: the most exciting city in Europe!

    Thank you!

I've been in Berlin before, so I've visited already the touristic places. This tour showed me the diversity of Berlin from a different point of view. Our guide, Ryan is amazing, he has a strong "baritone" voice, and even with the cold weather you could hear him telling stories from the twenties crazy days to the recent raw meat and fish battles at the end of august (he was very proud his team won 2011's battle). If you are in Berlin don't miss this tour. The only objection, we were too many people for one group, thank's god Ryan has a strong voice, but we were slower than expected.

Really great tour with an excellent guide who told us a lot about the alternative and modern Berlin, nice information that you wouldn't find in any official guide. Our tour took almost 5 hours (some stops for coffee and lunch included), so don't be in a hurry if you book this trip.

It's great to do this tour after (or before) you've visited the more official sites (like the Dom or AlexanderPlatz or musea), because this tour will show you a totally different Berlin.

Awesome tour! Saw places that you would not find on the tourist map... beautiful street art... a real artist aquat and a unique jamaican beach bar/hangout. Highly recommend!

  • Hans d. says:

The weather was horrible during the tour and that did detract a bit from the experience (I can imagine that YAAM looks very different when it isn't dark outside and cold): so do this tour when the weather is decent. However our guide did not get demotivated and did a good job: we enjoyed it!

Really interesting and a great way to experience Berlin, just a small group, me +1 and the guide. Do it the first thing in Berlin, so you have the opportunity to return to the places you liked

This tour was exactly what we were looking for.
Amazing locations all different from eachother.
Brilliant and engaging dialog with the guide. The stories about the artists, neighborhoods and Berlin culture were very inspiring.

We´d spent a few days walking around and not seen one tenth what we saw and learnt on this tour. The photo opportunites were breathtaking and the tour guide simply outstanding. I highly recommend you do this on your first day here as you will want to go back to some of these places.

Thankyou for making this city come to life !
